Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before hiring Be Colouring for your next painting project.

About Be Colouring

Where is Be Colouring located?

Be Colouring is located in NYC. We service the Metro NY area including Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Orange, Putnam and Ulster Counties, Hudson and Essex Counties, New Jersey and Fairfield County, Connecticut.

What separates Be Colouring from other painting companies?

We're anal, seriously. We treat every project like it's our own. If we can't look at the final product and say hey that's a job we're proud of, then we haven't finished.

Our customers are always our priority. We do everything we can to make sure that each project is completed as promised, on budget, on time and with 100 percent satisfaction.

How long have you been in business?

Be Colouring was founded in 2019.

Do you just hire random painters?

All of our painters are screened and trained in the Be Colouring way of painting. The members of our crews form a tight knit group who work with each other on a regular basis.

Do your painters speak English?

Yes, and to help facilitate communication even further, we have a designated project manager leading each crew. The supervisor acts as your liaison while on the job. Any questions or concerns should be directed to him so that he can help get the answers you need right away.

Are you insured?

Yes. We know accidents happen and for the safety of our customers and employees, we carry full insurance coverage through Hiscox. Copies are available upon request.

Pricing & Payment

Are your estimates free?

Yes, we offer 100% free estimates, with no strings attached. Our estimates are also good for 45 days. Painting estimates depend on the type and scope of the job. Our estimates also consider paint and material costs, as well as labor costs for preparation, painting, and cleanup.

Do I need to pay upfront?

We never ask a customer to pay in full up front. However, in order to be best prepared for your job the moment we arrive, we do ask for a deposit the day you sign with us which is 1/3 of the full project cost.

The Work

What are your most common type of jobs?

We offer many services, including but not limited to interior and exterior painting, office painting, residential and commercial painting, cabinet painting, grout painting, drywall repair, and wallpaper removal.

Do you spackle and do wall repair?

Yes. We want each job to come out the best that it can, and we always recommend properly preparing the walls before applying the finish paint. Our professionals know how to bring out the best from your walls whether they've been dinged by a stroller or damaged from a water leak.

If I hire you, how soon can you start?

With multiple crews on our team, we can accommodate almost any deadline.

How fast can you finish my job?

Our crews are experienced professionals — that means they work efficiently without compromising quality. Most projects we work on are completed in 2–3 days, but a lot depends on the scope of the project. An unfurnished two bedroom apartment is going to go faster than a furnished two bedroom apartment and even an exterior paint job.

Do you work on weekends?

We pride ourselves on flexibility and understand that each person's schedule is unique. In order to accommodate tight schedules, we have crews that work on the weekends. That said, co-ops and condos usually don't let contractors in on weekends while exterior house painting, yes. So it really depends on your situation.

Does the customer need to be home while painting takes place?

No. We are a family-owned business and treat your home as if it was our own. Feel confident knowing that your home and its valuables are safe while work is being done.

Do I need to remove heavy furniture?

No. We move all heavy furniture. We only ask that you move valuables, small items and breakables, such as glassware, lamps, and pictures — things that have emotional or real world dollar value.

Paint & Materials

What type of paint do you use?

Using fine paints results in a rich beauty and durability that is unmatched, and it's why Be Colouring works with top brands such as Fine Paints of Europe, Farrow & Ball, Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, C2, and PPG, amongst others. For cabinet refinishing we also work with specialty wood coatings from Renner and Milesi.

Can I use paint I purchased?

Absolutely, we will happily use any paint product that you supply. That said, we receive discounts at Janovic (Benjamin Moore) and Sherwin-Williams which are passed on to our clients.

Who buys the paint?

We offer a complimentary service to pick up the paint for your job so you don't have to bother. Just let us know in advance which colors you are using, and we'll take care of the rest.

Do you use oil-based or latex-based paints and primers?

We prefer using latex-based paints and primers because they contain fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They give off fewer fumes, meaning less disruption for your workspace. Latex-based paints are also more moisture-resistant, which helps prevent mold and mildew. That said, sometimes a project requires oil-based paint or primer — for example kitchen cabinets.

What type of paints should I use for the interior of my home?

Ceilings: Flat. Walls: Eggshell. Trim, baseboards, doors & door frames: Satin or Semi-Gloss. Kitchen & bathroom walls/ceilings: Satin or Semi-Gloss. Window sills & radiators: Satin or Semi-Gloss. Interior closets: Flat.
